“Melancholy is an illness that lets you see things as they are” Gérard de Nerval wrote, fully steeped in melancholy and before he chose to die.

Tracing back to the ‘black bile’ of its Hippocratic etymology, it has long been seen as both a source of genius and a spur to creativity. It is itself an aesthetic: a gentle sadness, a comforting vagueness of spirit. Those who surrender to it find their inner sense of time suspended and risk never returning. Art is its most sublime outlet.
